Riccardo Del Fra was born in Rome. After studying at the Frosinone Conservatory, he played in the RAI (Italian Radio and Television) orchestra for jazz concerts and film soundtrack recordings.
In 1979, he played and recorded with Chet Baker. This was a pivotal encounter. He accompanied the trumpeter for nine years, touring extensively in Europe and Japan, and recording numerous albums.
In the early 1980s, he moved to Paris. He became the regular bassist for Johnny Griffin, Barney Wilen, and Bob Brookmeyer. After Chet Baker’s death in 1988, Riccardo dedicated his album *A Sip of Your Touch* to him. In 2006, he received a Django d’Or award, and in 2008, the European Musician of the Year award.
